love is...
[february 2013]

when i was growing up love was the fairytale endings.  it was the fancy dresses at the ball and the magical kiss at midnight.  the princess marrying her prince charming and riding off into happily ever after.
...
as i continued to grow i realized it was the warm dinners inside the doors of a good home.  support and encouragement from great parents, and playing pretend for hours on end with my brother.
...
middle school became the days of finding your love by playing "MASH".  the crush of this week would inevitably change by the end of next. and passing notes with the BFF was kind of a big deal.
...
high school brought the days of first dates, prom, and hopes of them liking you back.  it was finding out who your true friends were and sticking together when things got tough.
...
then came college.  love was the roommate staying up as you throw up all night.  or sitting with you until the tears stopped.  telling you that bad grades really weren't the end of the world.  and knowing that the people who love you most were only, and always, a phone call away.
...
the years wore on, with discouragement on the rise.  but often, there were times being filled with perfect light from above.  casting out all doubts and being reminded that even i was not forgotten.  the constant reminders that i am a daughter of God.  and learning every day of Christ and His perfect love.
...
through college came the "potentials". the ones that just never seemed quite right. or just never really seemed to work out.  but there was one that was one boy who was always different.  [little did she know that 3 years, to the day, after they shook hands and said their good byes, he would be asking to be hers forever.]
...
this boy was one that filled dreams.  a simple touch sent her soaring and their first kiss was no where near real life.  the friday night date night.  the times he called when he knew she was in tears. the laughter and smiles.  the studying on the couch for hours because she couldn't bear to go home.
...
it was hearing the words, "man ashley, i really do love you." for the first time.  and knowing that he really meant it.
...
it all led to their perfect day. well, many perfect days, but one that surpassed them all.  may 23rd in the draper temple. where they became a forever family.
...
but there's a whole lot more that i've figured out about love.  it's learning that "love is nothing like the movies".  it's real life. day to day.  the ups and the downs.  it's not always fairytales and butterflies.  sometimes it's just plain hard.  it's doing the dishes when you really don't want to.  it's the ten minute break you have to talk on the phone.  it's hearing "i love you" and "you're beautiful" even when you're grumpy and in sweats.  it's him getting up early to make my lunch every morning when he'd rather be sleeping.  and through it all, it's better, stronger, love than ever before.
...
but what i've learned the most is, i still have got a lot to learn about love.

[today marks four years since we said his pre-mission goodbyes. one year since i said "yes".]

with love, ashley.

  2. I'm so happy for you, Ashley! You and your family are wonderful. My sweet husband gets up early to make my lunch every school day, and my salad is the envy of all the teachers at school. You are SO blessed to have such a sweet husband, but then, you deserve him!

I'm sure it's hard to imagine, but your life and love will just keep getting better!

    Best Wishes!
